A digital phone line that can transmit data, video and voice; these lines are point-to-point connections from the telephone company to the computer user. Even though ISDN uses existing phone lines, it does require specialized equipment; ISDN is considered to be the basis for a "universal network" that can support almost any type of communications device or service.
