Fiber Cabling

Fiber cabling consists of fiber cables made of thin strands of glass. Data can be transmitted using these strands of optically pure glass.

Parts of fiber cabling include the:

  • Core - Thin glass center of the fiber, location where data is transmitted.
  • Cladding - Material surrounding core of a fiber.
  • Buffer coating - Protective coating applied directly to fiber.

Fiber optic bundles contain many fibers and are protected by the cable's outer covering, (or jacket).

Fiber cabling has many advantages over other types of fiber cabling. Some of these advantages include EMI and RFI immunity, lighter weight, smaller diameter, use less power, higher bandwidth, non-flammable, and they are better suited for longer distance transmissions.
