All-Silica Fiber

All-silica fiber is optical fiber that has a silica, or glass, core and cladding. The refractive index of the core is higher than that of the cladding. The low attenuation of all-silica fiber comes at a higher cost than that of plastic fiber optic cable or plastic-clad fiber cable.

All-silica fiber is the most widely used type of fiber and is the type that installers have the most experience with making connectors easy to attach.

Impurities are added to the glass to acheive the desired amount of refractive index. Some impurites however can increase the attenuation of the signal.
