Extrinsic Loss

Loss that is induced in an optical transmission system by an external source. In a fiber-optic link, this can be caused by improper alignment of connectors or splices.

Extrinsic loss may be caused by macrobending or microbending.

Macrobending – Light lost from the optical core due to macroscopic effects such as bending and crushing. For instance, the poor handling of a fiber or a tight bend radius installation may result in macrobending.

Microbending – Light lost from the optical core due to microscopic effects resulting from deformation and damage to the core in manufacturing.
