Active Star
An Active Device that connects two or more Fiber optic Link segments. Optical signals received on the
input fiber of any input/output Port pairs are converted to electrical signals. These are relayed to the
outputs of all other input/output port pairs, and converted to optical signals which are transmitted on
the output fibers. Collisions are detected and enforced by the Active Star. An Active Star may have two
types of ports: (1) Asynchronous Ports capable of receiving FOIRL compatible signals, and (2)
Synchronous Ports that transmit and receive only those optical signals synchronized to the 10BASE-F
synchronous Active Idle signal. Synchronous ports must be used to connect Active Stars.
